Lower School (K-4)

We build the foundation for life-long learning in the Charles Wright Academy Lower School.

Students in our award-winning program have a myriad of opportunities for creative expression, problem-solving, teamwork, and inquiry in a diverse community. Students engage in active, joyful learning every single day, while building skills and developing the confidence they need to be successful. 

All of our classroom teachers are supported by an assistant teacher. Students receive weekly instruction from qualified specialist teachers—experts in their respective fields of Music, STEM, Library Sciences, Visual Arts, Spanish Language and Culture, and more. They have additional opportunities for private study of piano or classical stringed instruments and enrichment classes in Lego engineering, theater, chess, and competitive organized athletics. Our highly-qualified learning specialist, dedicated to students with learning profiles in K-4 assists students in reaching their full potential. Experiential and outdoor education activities, cultural field trips, and opportunities to develop deep friendships and a community of belonging round out an exceptional student experience.

We believe that providing students with experiences in global cultures, hands-on STEM curriculum, developmentally-appropriate physical education, and meaningful participation in visual and performing arts are an absolute must for all our Lower School learners. With an average class size of 16 and a student-to-teacher ratio of 8-to-1 or better, every child is known, nurtured, and challenged. Trust and respect are developed between students and teachers in this environment. Family partnership in all aspects of the learner journey is encouraged, sought, and deeply valued.

The Lower School at Charles Wright Academy is a diverse learning community with 200 students across Pierce, King, Thurston, and Kitsap Counties. Nearly 40% of the Lower School self-identify as students of color.
