Nick Zosel-Johnson appointed to Director of Lower School beginning August 2018

Tacoma, Wash. — Charles Wright Academy is pleased to announce the appointment of Nick Zosel-Johnson to Director of Lower School beginning August 2018.

A graduate of Claremont McKenna College, Mr. Zosel-Johnson began his teaching career in Chicago where he taught third grade as part of “Teach for America.” He holds a master of arts in teaching degree from Dominican University, and attended the Klingenstein Private School Leadership master’s program at Columbia University. Nick came to CWA in 2009 and was a fourth grade teacher before his promotion to Assistant Lower School Director in 2017.

“Nick has done an outstanding job this year in his role as Assistant Lower School Director. He is a generous and authentic person, an experienced Lower School teacher, and a thoughtful and reflective administrator. I am confident Nick will build on the extraordinary work done by Diane Hunt and the entire LS faculty in creating a strong culture of professionalism and excellence in service to our students,” Head of School Matt Culberson said.

“Nick is a thoughtful, respectful, compassionate, and inspiring individual. He has provided excellent leadership in many capacities at school during the last 10 years. He creates a school experience where kids feel safe, learn, and thrive, and he establishes strong and responsive partnerships with parents. He supports and guides teachers to provide a creative, engaging, and productive learning environment for their students. His is respected tremendously for his work with Charles Wright students and families. The Lower School will soar under Nick’s leadership,” Director of Lower and Middle Schools Diane Hunt said. Ms. Hunt will continue to serve CWA as Director of Middle School next year.

Mr. Zosel-Johnson has a particular passion for math and literacy instruction, as well as outdoor education. He stays connected with former students through his leadership of the eighth grade Beach Hike and sophomore Outdoor Education programs, as well as Math is Cool, and Running Club. Nick believes that independent schools play an important role in creating a more inclusive and equitable society and enjoys serving on the Diversity Committee. In the classroom, he takes pride in helping his students become reflective, self-directed learners who apply a growth mindset to discover the inherent joy of learning.

“Nick is an exceptional leader and this new title fits all his intentional work in directing the Lower School. He is admired for how he approaches every situation, big or small, with an equal amount of grace. He is a joy to work with,” Third Grade Teacher Matt Weiner said.

When asked his thoughts regarding his upcoming role at Charles Wright, Nick answered, “My favorite part of the day this year has been greeting our Lower School students at the door each morning. When they walk through that door, I know that they will be cared for and nurtured by an extraordinary faculty and staff who foster a deep and lasting love of learning. I am excited to step into this role and continue the strong foundation for student learning and character education that is a hallmark of the CWA experience.”

Mr. Zosel-Johnson is the recipient of the 2015 Inspirational Faculty Award from the Charles Wright Academy Parent Association. He was raised in Eugene, Oregon, and lives in Tacoma with his wife, Susan Sparrow, who teaches eighth grade history at CWA, and their young daughter.

We at CWA are incredibly excited to welcome Nick into this new role for the start of the next school year.
