Rob Scotlan is the Middle School Assistant Director and also teaches eighth grade English. “I especially enjoy discussing in class the books we read,” says Scotlan. “It gives all of us an opportunity to find the little pieces of humor, tragedy, and drama that often goes overlooked while reading a novel.”
Rob uses grammar and mythology raps to help his eighth grade students learn all about verbs, adjectives, pronouns, and other parts of speech, as well as Greek gods and goddesses. Teach This, Rob’s grammar album, and Mythology and Me: An Age of Dysfunction are both for sale on Amazon and iTunes. You can read more about Rob’s use of music in the classroom in Tacoma’s News Tribune and on King5’s Evening Magazine.
After graduate school, Rob flew to England and spent four months working as a server in an eatery in Reigate, Surrey. He spent several months touring Scotland, France, Spain, and Italy. He has also visited Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Hungary, Croatia, Austria, Greece, and Ireland. In 2020 he plans to scale Mount Everest.
In addition to teaching, he coaches basketball and volleyball and leads eighth graders on the annual four-day backpacking trip along the Olympic coast. Rob was a member of a USA volleyball team and competes in both regional and national tournaments. He also volunteers in the community as a mentor, plays the guitar, and is an avid reader.
