Math

The Upper School science department strives to improve problem solving, critical thinking, laboratory skills, and overall student scientific literacy. The sequence of science courses at Charles Wright Academy is designed to allow each student to graduate with a solid background in biology, physics, and chemistry. Coursework begins with 9th grade biology, followed by physics, and then chemistry. Although somewhat non-traditional, the relatively non-mathematical biology course allows a year of Algebra to be completed. This allows the student to be better prepared for the fundamental mathematical principles of physics, chemistry and advanced coursework. The graduation requirement is the successful completion of three lab courses as well as a science or math course in the senior year.

For most students, the science department recommends enrollment in advanced courses. To facilitate this, the department offers a flowchart depicting various course sequences. Students in the Upper School should map several options based on interest and achievement. They should also keep in mind that enrollment into AP and advanced science courses require departmental approval. Recommendations and approval are based upon quality of past coursework, math skills, demonstrated interest, and effort grades. All students enrolled in AP courses are required to take the AP examination in May.
