Little known fact: CWA has one of the most successful college prep math programs in the country. By fourth and fifth grade, it’s typical for 95 percent of our students to earn scores in the top half of national norms on standardized math tests. Students build on that foundation through Middle and Upper School where we offer 12 different math courses across five grade levels. By graduation, half our students take Advanced Placement calculus and it’s quite common for 100% of them to pass. Our students' SAT math scores are also well above local, state and national averages. These results are astounding, unless you know our faculty.
CWA's math program provides a balanced approach to the two vital components of math education: skill development and mathematical reasoning. Our strong academic program emphasizes the discovery and application of mathematical ideas and includes the thoughtful integration of technology. Students graduate from CWA with a solid foundation, prepared to study mathematics at the university level.
Each student completes a minimum of three years of mathematics while enrolled in the Upper School including algebra, geometry and algebra II. However, almost all of our students take four years of math with more than half taking AP calculus. We offer a total of 12 different math courese between grades seven and twelve.
Our flowchart provides a visual overview of our sequence of courses. For a more detailed description of the individual courses as well as the prerequisites, visit the math section of the course catalog. Or, read what our students, teachers and alums say about our math program.
