Jim Dempsey
Dean of Students, Upper School History
Jim Dempsey teaches psychology and serves as the dean of students in the Upper School. He works closely with the students who serve in student government on the
honor board, and he advises the student/faculty senate. He hopes that students will remember him as someone who modeled his beliefs and principles well.
“The greatest illustration of the student/teacher bond to me is the number of students who choose to stay in touch with us,” says Dempsey. “I have been back to my high school once in the 16 years since I graduated, and I never talk with any of my former teachers. So, the fact that I am able to stay in touch with a fairly large number of former students makes me feel like CWA is a very special place.”
Dempsey graduated from Central Washington University, began substitute teaching and coaching at Charles Wright in 1998, and joined the faculty in 2000. He enjoys all sports, but especially soccer. He was once almost hit by a flare while watching a soccer game in Italy. He coaches boys’ and girls’ soccer at Charles Wright and in 2007 was named co-coach of the year among girls’ soccer coaches in the Nisqually League.
“I appreciate the fact that I have the opportunity to do many things here at Charles Wright,” says Dempsey. “I am interested in a lot, so to be able to indulge my passions here is a great thing!”
Dempsey also enjoys boating, hiking, philosophy and volunteering at St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen. He loves music and usually has Bob Marley or Bruce Springsteen playing in his office.
