Tacoma’s story spans more than two centuries from the time Captain George Vancouver anchored off Tacoma’s north shore in 1792.
In 1870, Tacoma’s natural deep-water port became an attraction that the Northern Pacific Railroad couldn’t pass up, when it made Tacoma a stop on its transcontinental line.
Old Tacoma and New Tacoma merged in 1884 and incorporated as Tacoma. By 1890, the population reached 36,000 people.
Tacoma is home to the Port of Tacoma, the seventh-largest container port in the United States, and it is within 20 miles of the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and 36 miles of the city of Seattle.

FROM THE SOUTH
Take I-5 NORTH to exit 130, 56th STREET WEST. At the end of the exit ramp, at the stoplight, turn LEFT (west) onto SOUTH 56th STREET and cross over the freeway. Follow 56th for about 3.6 miles. Note: At South Orchard Street, 56th changes to CIRQUE DRIVE WEST. Continue on CIRQUE, cross 67th AVENUE WEST, and continue about 1/3 mile to the next traffic light. Turn LEFT (south) onto BRIDGEPORT WAY WEST. At the second traffic light, turn RIGHT (west) onto CHAMBERS CREEK LANE, which becomes CHAMBERS CREEK ROAD WEST. Follow CHAMBERS CREEK about 1/4 mile, cross a small bridge, and immediately after the bridge turn RIGHT at the school’s entrance.
FROM THE NORTH
Take I-5 SOUTH to exit 130, 56th STREET WEST. The exit ramp forks; stay right. At the stoplight at the end of the exit ramp, turn LEFT (south). Immediately upon turning, move into the RIGHT lane to make a RIGHT turn (west) at the next stoplight onto SOUTH 56th STREET. Follow 56th for about 3.6 miles. Note: At South Orchard Street, 56th changes to CIRQUE DRIVE WEST. Continue on CIRQUE, cross 67th AVENUE WEST, and continue about 1/3 mile to the next traffic light. Turn LEFT (south) onto BRIDGEPORT WAY WEST. At the second traffic light, turn RIGHT (west) on to CHAMBERS CREEK LANE, which becomes CHAMBERS CREEK ROAD WEST. FROM KITSAP COUNTY
From Hwy 16 East take the first exit at JACKSON AVE. Turn RIGHT at the end of the exit ramp onto JACKSON AVE. Note: At South 19th Street, JACKSON AVE. will turn into BRIDGEPORT WAY WEST. Continue on BRIDGEPORT WAY WEST until you reach the intersection of BRIDGEPORT WAY WEST and CHAMBERS CREEK LANE. Turn RIGHT (west) on to CHAMBERS CREEK LANE, which becomes CHAMBERS CREEK ROAD WEST. Follow CHAMBERS CREEK about 1/4 mile, cross a small bridge, and immediately after the bridge turn RIGHT at the school’s entrance.
