Athletics aren’t an extracurricular offering at Charles Wright Academy -- they are an integral part of the curriculum from our pre-k Beginning School through the Upper School. We believe there is much to be learned while at play with teammates, and much to be gained from building a lifetime commitment to fitness.
Our coordinated athletic program takes a sequential approach through Lower, Middle and Upper School, building skills at each level. We encourage broad-based participation, and any student who wants to play will have the opportunity. Among last year’s graduates, 96% participated in the school’s athletic program during their high school years.
How good can such an inclusive athletic program be when it comes to getting the “W”? In recent years, against challenging competition in the 1A division, Charles Wright has been ranked among the top three programs in Washington.
Last year the Tarriers racked up eight league championships, five district titles, and two state championships. Charles Wright athletes competed at the state level in eleven different sports and nine students returned with top-three finishes. All-league honors were awarded to 49 Tarriers with seven athletes winning honors in more than one sport. CWA also honors athletes with letters, special awards for athleticism and sportsmanship, and induction into the Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame.
Athletes who are deeply committed to sports CWA does not offer, like swimming or hockey, are encouraged to compete for other area schools or club teams. CWA grants independent sports credit to students in this unique situation.
CWA offers participation at both varsity and JV levels in a wide variety of sports. While the Upper School is a member of the Nisqually League, the Middle School competes in the Middle Chinook League. CWA is a member of the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) and competes in the 1A classification.
