Charles Wright’s volleyball program, created in 1999, is one of its youngest team sports. The school fields both Upper and Middle School varsity and junior varsity squads with more than 65 girls participating in the program. In the fall of 2008, the team made it farther into the post-season than any team in Charles Wright. In 2009, they ended their season with their very first trip to the tri-district tournament.
“The purpose of Charles Wright’s volleyball program is to provide a vehicle for vigorous physical activity that encourages character development, creates opportunities to learn and master new skills, and provides a forum for achieving competitive excellence,” explains Head Coach Mindy McGrath. “We hope to encourage a lifelong appreciation and passion for the game of volleyball.”
Through the game of volleyball, athletes learn how hard work can help them achieve personal and team goals, and they discover the value of putting the team’s success ahead of their own. In victory or defeat, Tarriers are always taught to demonstrate grace and sportsmanship.
“I’m so pleased to see that this year’s senior class has adopted the same emphasis on team leadership that helped us develop last year,” says Coach McGrath. “Our girls worked hard during the off season and I’m really excited about their potential this year. We’ve got some up-and-coming talent that I look forward to showcasing.”
Charles Wright’s volleyball coaching staff gives athletes the direction and support they need to develop as a team and individually. Coach McGrath is now in her sixth season at Charles Wright. She played volleyball at Principia College and served as an assistant coach there after graduating.
