Track and field is one of CWA’s most diverse and unique sports and the Middle and Upper School students who turn out for track and field each spring form one of the school’s largest teams.  The sport brings together athletes with various interests and talents, and provides an excellent opportunity to try something new for those students who are aren’t sure yet if they really consider themselves athletes.  CWA is extremely competitive at the league, district and state levels.  In 2009, CWA won state championships in four events.  Tarriers also hold several state meet records.

CWA’s track and field program strives to help athletes gain a lifelong appreciation for competition, fitness, team work, self improvement, and work ethic; all while demonstrating integrity and developing character.  Athletes have the option of specializing in one area of track and field, or participating in all four disciplines of sprints, distance, jumps, and throws.  The best part of track and field is that it combines both an individual and team component.  It also serves as an excellent cross training sport for athletes who also compete in Charles Wright’s fall and winter sports seasons.

CWA’s track and field coaches put a strong emphasis on teamwork.  The entire team warms up together every practice and has post meet debriefing before splitting off into event specialties.   Even though athletes compete against others, placing as a team and setting new personal records is their main objective throughout the season.

Michelle Svensen and Mike Finch are co-head coaches of the Upper School team.  Svensen has coached track and field at CWA since 2001.  She focuses on working with female sprinters and relay teams.  Finch joined the coaching staff in 2008 and works with boys sprinters and relay teams.  Ryan Johnson coaches distance runners, Neil Biermann coaches jumpers, Jon Flies coaches hurdles and John Lawrence coaches throwers.

Svensen also serves the Middle School head track and field team with assistance from Steve Daniels, Deana Wiatr and Rachel Rippl.  CWA’s Lower School running club is where many Tarriers first develop their love of running which leads them into the Middle and Upper School track and field program.  Track and field events are also woven into the school’s physical education program.
