Tennis has a proud tradition at Charles Wright Academy, boasting one of the best boys teams in the state throughout the 1970s, winning a 1A state title in 1988, and garnering back-to-back state titles in 2007 and 2008. After an undefeated season in 2009-2010, the Tarriers won the state championships again and brought home the boys doubles title as well. The girls team also has a long tradition of excellence, and has recently claimed the title of league and quad-district championships in 2008, 2009 and 2010. The girls took second as a team at the state tournament in 2010.
As a member of the Nisqually League, the Tarriers play larger Tacoma area public schools such as Fife, Vashon, Steilacoom, Washington, and Eatonville, and private schools including Cascade Christian and Northwest Christian. The boys team competes during the fall sports season and the girls compete during the spring. Both boys and girls play their post-season matches in the spring.
In the quad-district tournament, held in May at the University of Washington, CWA’s top players go up against a variety of schools, public and private. Some of CWA’s toughest competition comes from Seattle-area independent schools like University Prep, Overlake, and Bush. The top finishers in the quad-district move on to the 1A State Championships in Yakima over Memorial Day weekend.
Many members of the CWA teams, but not all, play during their Middle School years in the school’s tennis program and outside school at local clubs or in competitive tournaments. Once in the Upper School, all players attend daily practices where drilling, match play, and physical conditioning are integrated to create an atmosphere of healthy competition and fun physical excursion.
Coaches Reini Vanderheyd, Dave Gibson and Michelle Fladabo focus on skill development, match strategy, fitness, sportsmanship, and teamwork in their attempt to fulfill individual and team potential.
