Respect, responsibility, reliability and relationships.  That’s what the Tarrier football program is all about.  By the time some of these players reach their senior season, they will have played together for eight years.  That’s the unique benefit of a 1A football program where the head varsity coach knows every player from the first time they catch a football in Lower School.

“We focus on the team as a family,” says Coach Mike Finch. “Our parents, faculty, alumni and student body provide phenomenal support to our program which enables our boys to better understand the importance of a tightly knit community structure.”

The individual attention athletes in this program receive helps them develop to their full personal and athletic potential and makes them better members of the Charles Wright community.

Created in 1960, football was Charles Wright’s first high school sport.  The proud legacy of the 1972 league championship team and the 1989 state championship contenders lives on today.  The annual Headmaster’s Picnic and Homecoming games are two of the school’s most cherished traditions.

Tarriers start learning the basics of the game as early as the fourth grade through the school’s youth sports program.  Interscholastic competition begins in seventh grade and Charles Wright fields varsity and junior varsity squads in the Upper School.  Last year, six Tarriers received All-League honors.

Finch joined the program in 2007 and became head coach in 2008.  He has been teaching and coaching football since graduating from Harvard University where he played defensive back for the Crimson.  He is supported by a top-notch team of assistant coaches.

“My coaching staff includes not only excellent coaches but excellent men,” says Finch. “They have a passion for the game and they love and care about the players.  It is an honor and a blessing to be the Head Football Coach at Charles Wright Academy.”
