The CWA cross-country program challenges student athletes to test their comfort zones. Cross-country demands an intense physical workload of vigorous aerobic and anaerobic training. This is balanced with the mental training (visualization, racing, and more) so that when the Tarriers line up at the start line, they are ready to run and race anyone.
CWA’s running program builds skills at each level. As early as Beginning School, four-year-old Tarriers can turn out for the popular Running Club, which has more than 100 members. The state of Washington boasts some of the toughest cross-country competition in the nation and by the time they reach the Middle and Upper School, CWA runners are among the best of the best.
State championships were won by Tarriers Tommy Wyatt in 2003, Alex Crabill in 2004, Peter Browne in 2005 and Lizzie Jewson in 2006. CWA won the boys 1A state team title in 2003 and 2004 and the girls title in 2005. In 2008, CWA’s boys team took second at state.
Meanwhile, the Middle School program has been growing steadily and 32 boys and girls turned out for the team in 2009. In 2008 and 2010, CWA won both the boys and girls league championships in cross-country, the highest level of Middle School competition. Because many CWA athletes develop a passion for cross-country in Middle School, the school has some of the most competitive freshmen and sophomore runners in the state.
Since 2007, Ryan Johnson has coached the Upper School’s cross-country team. Jaime O’Dell has served as an assistant coach since 2006. The Middle School team is coached by Christopher Hoppin and Jim Albers.
High school competitors run 5 kilometer (3.1 mile) races. Locally, CWA runners practice at Point Defiance, North Fort Lewis and Fort Steilacoom, the team’s home course. In addition to competing in WIAA league, district and state meets, CWA participates in the Bellarmine Invite, Stanford Invite, the Jim Danner Invite and Footlocker Western Regional Meet.
