There are few more quintessential American experiences than playing baseball on a warm summer evening with the smell of hot dogs hanging in the air as you wait for the crack of the wooden bat. The Charles Wright baseball teams play March through May, the weather is often more wet than warm, hot dogs aren’t generally for sale, and the bats are aluminum, but for players and fans alike, the experience is still as American as apple pie.
The Tarriers have a very strong baseball tradition including seven state appearances. Charles Wright won the state championship in 1980 and came in second in 1979, 1981 and 1992. Construction of the new Lower School briefly moved the team off campus in the early 2000s, but the Tarriers are back on school grounds and building a team they hope will rise to the top of the league in coming years.
Charles Wright’s baseball program begins in Middle School with the seventh and eighth grade team competing in the Middle Chinook League. In the spring of 2009, 25 Upper School athletes turned out for baseball, including 18 freshmen and sophomores. Coaches are thrilled to be fielding two teams – varsity and JV – for the first time in many years. The addition of the JV team is allowing many of the team’s younger players to get in valuable playing time. This experience is especially critical as the team develops a talented pool of young pitchers. Off-season workouts are also helping to build a strong team.
The Tarriers baseball coaching staff is led by Tyler Francis. Jim Pelander serves as the assistant varsity coach and pitching coach. The JV team is coached by Earl Davis and Peder Knudson. The Middle School team is coached by Jeff Duncan, Alex Koerger and Jim Albers.
